Trump's Defense Pick Pete Hegseth Faces 2017 Sexual Assault Allegations

Pete Hegseth, nominated by Donald Trump for the position of Defense Secretary, has become embroiled in controversy following accusations of sexual assault dating back to 2017.

According to police in Monterey, California, an investigation was conducted into an alleged assault at a hotel in early October 2017, which reportedly involved bruising on the victim’s right thigh.

However, no charges were filed, and the investigation was closed without evidence to support the claim. Hegseth's lawyer, Timothy Parlatore, emphasized that the police had found no grounds for the allegation.

The news of the accusation caught Trump’s transition team by surprise, especially as Hegseth, a National Guard veteran and Fox News host, had already been selected to lead the U.S. military. Despite his lack of large organizational management experience, the nomination had already raised eyebrows within Washington circles.

Reports, including one from Vanity Fair, suggest that the Trump team is now considering its options in light of the renewed public attention surrounding Hegseth.

Steven Cheung, communications director for Donald Trump, has strongly defended Pete Hegseth, the president's pick for Defense Secretary, against allegations of sexual assault.

Cheung stated that Hegseth "has vigorously denied any and all accusations," emphasizing that no charges were filed in the case. He also expressed confidence in Hegseth’s upcoming confirmation, saying that he is eager to start his role to “Make America Safe and Great Again.”

However, Hegseth’s Senate confirmation hearing is expected to be contentious, given not only his lack of experience managing large organizations but also his controversial actions during Trump’s first term.

Among these controversies was Hegseth’s lobbying for the pardon of military service members accused of war crimes.

Hegseth, who joined Fox News as a contributor in 2014 and now co-hosts Fox and Friends Weekend and hosts Fox Nation, has a background as an infantry officer in the National Guard, having deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The allegations against Hegseth come amid broader scrutiny of Trump’s Cabinet picks, including his selection of former Congressman Matt Gaetz for attorney general.

Gaetz has faced his own long-standing sexual misconduct allegations, further intensifying the political fallout from Trump’s appointments.

Donald Trump, already facing legal challenges, was convicted of financial misconduct related to hush money payments made to a former porn star. He was also found liable for defaming and sexually abusing an author. Meanwhile, Pete Hegseth's personal life has been marked by controversy as well.

He has been married three times, with his first marriage ending in 2009 due to an "irretrievable breakdown" and "infidelity," as reported by The Washington Post. His second wife filed for divorce in September 2017, shortly after he had a child with a Fox News producer, whom he later married.
